This IELTS Speaking Part 2 cue card asks you to talk about news, covering what the news was; how you received the news; who gave it to you; and explain why this was good news.. Below is a band 9 sample answer with tips on structuring a two-minute talk.

The cue card

Talk about: News

You should say:

• what the news was
• how you received the news
• who gave it to you
• and explain why this was good news.

Timing

You have one minute to prepare and may make notes. Then speak for one to two minutes; the examiner may ask one or two short follow-up questions.

Band 9 sample answer

Recently, I received some wonderful news about my cousin getting engaged. I found out through a phone call from my aunt, who was thrilled to share the news. This was good news because my cousin has been in a loving relationship for several years, and I’m excited for her future. It brought joy to our family.

Tips

• Share your emotional response to the news to make your answer engaging. Use specific details to illustrate the significance. Keep your response organized and focused.
