General Training Task 1 — request letter: Requesting interview feedback from HR. This page gives the exam question and a band 9 model answer, with the tone, opening and closing lines that suit the letter. Aim for at least 150 words in about 20 minutes.
You recently attended a job interview, but you have not received any feedback yet. Write a letter to the Human Resources
manager.
In your letter, you should tell:
• Introduce yourself and mention the position you applied for
• Explain why you believe the interview went well
• Request an update on the result and explain why you need it promptly
| Letter type | Request |
| Tone | Formal |
| Opening | Dear Sir or Madam, / Dear HR Manager, |
| Closing | Yours faithfully, / Yours sincerely, |
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to follow up on my application for the position of Marketing Coordinator, for which I attended an interview at your offices on 14 May, and to respectfully request an update regarding the outcome of the selection process.
I am James Mitchell, and I applied for the role after seeing your advertisement on the company careers page. During the interview, I felt the discussion went well: I was able to demonstrate relevant experience managing social media campaigns, and the panel seemed particularly interested in my examples of coordinating cross-departmental product launches.
I would be grateful if you could let me know whether a decision has been reached, as I have received another offer with a response deadline at the end of this month. Understanding my status in your process would allow me to make an informed decision without delaying either employer unnecessarily. I remain very enthusiastic about the opportunity to join your team and would welcome any feedback from the interview if that would be possible.
Yours faithfully,
Strategy
Formal follow-up. Reference specific interview date and position in opening. Bullet 3 (urgency) requires a genuine reason —
"other offers pending" or "start date required by employer" are realistic.
Common trap
Bullet 2 (why you think it went well) is delicate — be confident but not arrogant. Use: "I felt the interview went
well and believe my experience aligns closely with the requirements."
