Table — Internet usage by age

Academic Task 1 — table: Table — Internet usage by age. This page gives the exam question and a band 9 model answer, with tips on selecting and comparing the key data. Aim for at least 150 words in about 20 minutes.

The exam question

The table below shows the percentage of people who used the internet daily in four age groups in 2015, 2020 and 2025.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Band 9 model answer

The table presents the proportion of the population in four age groups who accessed the internet on a daily basis in 2015, 2020 and 2025.

Overall, internet usage increased in every age category over the ten-year period, with the youngest group remaining the most connected and the oldest group the least, although seniors showed the greatest relative growth.

Among 16–24 year-olds, daily usage was already high at 92% in 2015 and climbed to 96% by 2020, reaching 98% in 2025. The 25–44 age group followed a similar pattern, rising from 78% to 85% and then to 89%.

Middle-aged users (45–64) started at 55% in 2015 but gained 13 percentage points by 2020 and a further six by 2025, ending at 74%. The 65+ group had the lowest figures throughout; however, their rate more than doubled from 28% in 2015 to 51% in 2025, representing the sharpest proportional increase of any cohort.

Examiner tips

Tables can be dense — select the most significant patterns (highest/lowest, biggest change). You may organise by row (age group) or by column (year); keep one method consistent.
