Band 9 model answer

The bar chart compares the volume of waste recycled in the UK, the USA, Germany and Japan in 2010 and 2020, measured in million tonnes.

Overall, every country recycled considerably more waste in 2020 than in 2010, and Germany recorded the highest figures in both years. Japan began with the lowest amount but showed a marked improvement over the decade.

In 2010, Germany recycled roughly 16 million tonnes, slightly ahead of the USA at about 14 million tonnes. The UK stood at approximately 12 million tonnes, while Japan recycled the least, at around 10 million tonnes.

By 2020, Germany remained the leader with nearly 22 million tonnes, an increase of six million. The USA rose to about 19 million tonnes and the UK to 18 million. Although Japan still recycled the smallest quantity, at roughly 15 million tonnes, it experienced the most noticeable growth in proportional terms, closing much of the gap with the other nations.

Examiner tips

Bar charts: compare categories and time periods. Open with a paraphrased introduction, state the overview immediately after, then group bars logically (highest/lowest, then changes). Use comparatives and precise data language.
