Academic Task 1 — tips: Essential tips for Writing Task 1. This page gives the exam question and a band 9 model answer, with tips on selecting and comparing the key data. Aim for at least 150 words in about 20 minutes.
What techniques should you use to prepare for and write Task 1 reports?
How to plan and write a Band 9 Task 1 report.
1. Analyse the visual first (2–3 minutes). Identify what is measured, the units, the time period, and whether the data is static (one point in time) or dynamic (changes over time).
2. Paragraph 1 — Introduction. Paraphrase the question in one sentence. Change the wording, not the meaning: "The line graph illustrates changes in the consumption of three products between 2000 and 2020, measured in tonnes."
3. Paragraph 2 — Overview. The most important paragraph. Give 2–4 of the biggest features: main increases and decreases, the highest and lowest figures, and the most striking comparison. No numbers here — trends only. Start with "Overall, …".
4. Paragraphs 3 and 4 — Details. Group the data logically (for example, the two rising lines together, the falling line separately) and support every claim with figures from the chart. Use approximation language: roughly, just under, around, approximately.
5. Compare, don't list. Examiners reward sentences that connect categories: "while", "whereas", "in contrast", "slightly ahead of".
6. Vary trend language. rise / climb / surge / peak; fall / decline / dip / plummet; remain stable / plateau / fluctuate.
7. Never add opinions, causes or conclusions. Task 1 is a factual report — no "this is because" and no concluding recommendation.
8. Check the word count. Write 160–190 words: enough to develop the details, short enough to stay accurate and leave time for Task 2.
