Describe something useful you bought second-hand.
You should say:

The best second-hand purchase I have ever made is my bicycle, which I bought three years ago through an online marketplace from a man who was relocating abroad. I had wanted to start cycling for fitness, but new bicycles of decent quality cost a surprising amount, and I was honestly unsure whether the hobby would survive my initial enthusiasm. Buying used seemed the intelligent compromise: the bicycle was a well-known brand, barely eighteen months old, and priced at less than half the original cost. I remember inspecting it carefully in the seller's parking area — checking the frame for cracks, testing the brakes and gears — while pretending to know more than I did, though I had genuinely watched several videos on inspecting used bicycles the night before. The seller even included his helmet, lights and pump because carrying them overseas made no sense. Three years later, I could not be more satisfied. The bicycle has needed nothing beyond routine servicing, I ride it several times a week, and it has probably saved me significant fuel money on short errands besides improving my health. The experience converted me to second-hand buying in general: since then I have bought used books, furniture and even a camera lens, and I have learned that patience and a careful inspection routinely find things whose only flaw is having had a previous owner.

Three forces converged: money, technology and values. Prices of new goods keep climbing while apps made person-to-person selling effortless and safer. Meanwhile, younger buyers increasingly see reuse as responsible rather than shameful — thrift has been rebranded from poverty to principle, which removed the old social stigma.
Anything where hygiene or safety history is invisible: mattresses, helmets that may have absorbed an impact, child car seats, and cheap electrical goods with unknown wiring. I would also avoid items whose main cost is in wear you cannot inspect. If failure could injure you, the discount is not worth it.
Substantially. Every reused item cancels the manufacturing of a new one — the raw materials, energy, water and shipping emissions — and simultaneously delays landfill. Extending a product's life is usually greener than recycling it, since recycling itself consumes energy. It is one of the rare environmental actions that saves money instead of costing it.
