IELTS Cue Card: Journey

This IELTS Speaking Part 2 cue card asks you to talk about journey, covering where you were going; how you were travelling; who you were with; what went wrong; and explain what you would do differently.. Below is a band 9 sample answer with tips on structuring a two-minute talk.

The cue card

Talk about: Journey

You should say:

where you were going
how you were travelling
who you were with
what went wrong
and explain what you would do differently.

Timing

You have one minute to prepare and may make notes. Then speak for one to two minutes; the examiner may ask one or two short follow-up questions.

Band 9 sample answer

I once took a journey to the mountains with my friends. We planned to hike for the weekend, but unfortunately, we got lost on the way. We were driving and missed a crucial turn. I would have paid more attention to the map and planned our route better. Despite the hiccup, we eventually found our way and had a great time exploring.

Tips

Use storytelling techniques to make your answer engaging. Clearly outline the sequence of events. Reflect on what you learned from the experience.
